Quick facts: In 2003, Kotkan Energia rebuilt its CHP plant by adding a 56 MWt biofuel CFB boiler. When added to a 25-MW cogen gas turbine built in 1997, this raised total capacity to 110 MWt and 47 MWe, sufficient to cover 80% of the city's heating load. The plant has an ESP of unique design from Ion Blast Oy and two scrubbers from Kvaerner Pulping Oy. BMH Wood Tehnology Oy delivered the fuel handling system for bark, saw dust, wood chips, wood residues, peat, recycled wood, and municipal waste.

KauVo
Location: Etela-Karjela
Operator: Kaukaan Voima Oy
Configuration: 1 X 125 MW CHP
Operation: 2010
Fuel: wood, peat
Boiler supplier: FW
T/G supplier: Siemens
EPC: AF-Group, CTS Engtec
Quick facts: This large-scale biomass power plant started up on 26 May 2010 after about 3yrs of construction by a workforce of up to 600 persons. The 125 MWe, 385 MWt BFB is run by Kaukaan Voima Oy, owned by Pohjolan Voima Oy and Lappeenrannan Energia Oy. The facility was finished under the €244mn budget. The new unit is fueled by bark, branches, tops, stumps, small wood and peat and is one of Finland's largest user of waste wood. Biomass accounts for approximately 80% of the plant's fuel supply with the balance being peat, although the boiler can fully fire either fuel. Process steam and electricity is supplied to the adjacent UPM-Kymmene pulp and paper mill and to Lappeenranta’s grid and district heating system. The boiler building is 63m high and the stack is 115m.
