Biomass Power Plants in the USA - N Carolina, S Carolina, & Virginia
Altavista
Location: VA
Operator: Dominion Virginia Power
Configuration: 1 X 51 MW CHP
Operation: 1992
Fuel: wood
Boiler supplier: B&W
T/G supplier: MHI
EPC: Ultrasystems E&C
Quick facts: This stoker-fired CHP plant was developed by Hadson Power with two boilers and a single T/G set. It supplied electricity to the grid and steam to Lane Furniture Co. In Dec 1991, LG&E Energy purchased Hadson Power and in Dec 2000, Dominion agreed to buy all three LG&E power plants in Virginia. The Altavista power plant was the first generating station in Virginia to receive the State's Occupational Health and Safety STAR award since the program's inception in 1996. Converted to 100% biomass and restarted at 51 MW in Jul 2013.
