Al Ezzel Location: Bahrain Operator: Al-Ezzel Power Co Configuration: two 475-MW, 2+1 CCGT blocks with SGT5-2000E gas turbines, desalination Fuel: natural gas, oil Operation: 2006-2007 HRSG supplier: Doosan T/G supplier: Siemens EPC: Siemens, Tractebel Al Khaleej Quick facts: This is Bahrain's first IPP and is located in the Hidd Industrial Area. The $500mn plant was opened in May 2007 by Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and increased the country's installed capacity by about 50%. The plant has a 20yr PPA with the Ministry of Electricity and Water signed in Jul 2004. Site work started in Dec 2004 and the GTs went into simple-cycle operation on schedule in late Apr 2006 after 29mos of work. The steam sets were added in May 2007. Site manpower peaked at 1,850 in Dec 2005 and there were only two minor lost-time accidents during more than 4.2mn manhours of work. The project was developed by Suez Energy International and Gulf Investment Corp, each of which retains a 45% stake after selling 5% each to the Pension Fund Commission of Bahrain. Al Dur Location: Bahrain Operator: Al-Dur Power & Water Co Configuration: two 668-MW CCGT blocks with 9001FA gas turbines, desalination Fuel: natural gas, oil Operation: 2010-2012 HRSG supplier: Hyundai T/G supplier: GE EPC: Hyundai Quick facts: On 1 May 2012, King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa inaugurated Bahrain's largest independent power generation and water desalination plant. Two of the gas turbines went into simple-cycle operation in 2010 and the facility began full commercial operation in Feb 2012. Desal capacity is 218,000 ³. In total, the plant can supply about one-third of the Kingdom's water and power supply. Bahrain Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) is the sole off-taker of the plant output under a 25yr PPA. Al Hidd II Location: Bahrain Operator: Ministry of Electricity & Water Configuration: 630-MW, 3+1 CCGT blcok with GT13E2 gas turbines, desalination Fuel: natural gas, oil Operation: 2004 HRSG supplier: Alstom T/G supplier: Alstom EPC: Alstom, Sadelmi Quick facts: In Apr 2000, ESB International was awarded the contract for preparation of specifications for the Al-Hidd II project plus expansion of the Hidd 220kV substation. In Sep 2001, Alstom was awarded a €350mn turnkey contract for the plant. The project also included water forwarding and blending stations, 45km of transmission line, and other water works.
