Cardinal Power Location: ON Operator: Cardinal Power of Canada LP Configuration: 156-MW, 1+1 CCGT with W501D5 gas turbine CHP Fuel: natural gas Operation: 1994 HRSG supplier: Zurn T/G supplier: WH, Brush EPC: Northern Engineering Industries, Bracknell Quick facts: This plant was developed by Sithe Energies and is now owned by Macquarie Power & Infrastructure. Electricity is sold to Electricity Financial Corp (OEFC) under a long-term power purchase agreement until 2014. The facility also sells steam and compressed air to Canada Starch Operating Co (CASCO) the largest corn refining plant in Canada, under a contract expiring in 2015. East Windsor Cogen Location: ON Operator: Pristine Power Inc Configuration: 2 X 46-MW LM6000PD gas turbines CHP Fuel: natural gas Operation: 2009 HRSG supplier: IST T/G supplier: GE EPC: AECON, MMM Group Quick facts: EWCC went commercial on 9 Nov 2009. Electricity is sold to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) connecting at 115kV through Hydro One Networks Inc and EWCC also supplies steam to the adjacent Ford Motor Co of Canada Ltd engine works. The wok scope included dual-pressure, once-through steam generators, two gas-fired auxiliary boilers, two fuel gas-compressors, distribution piping for high pressure and low pressure gas distribution to the gas turbines, the auxiliary boilers and building heating and electrical gear. On 2 Nov 2007, East Windsor Cogeneration LP completed a C$179mn private placement of secured debentures with Sun Life Financial, Manulife Financial, Canada Life and RBC Insurance with proceeds used to fund the project. Goreway Location: ON Operator: Sithe Global Power LLC Configuration: 905-MW, 3+1 CCGT with 7001FB gas turbines Operation: 2009 Fuel: natural gas HRSG supplier: Deltak T/G supplier: GE, Siemens EPC: SNC-Lavalin Quick facts: Goreway went commercial on 11 Jun 2009. It is located on a 20ha site in Brampton and is connected to Hydro One's 230kV transmission system. Ontario Power Authority has a 20yr PPA with the plant. A new underground gas pipeline was built to the station by Enbridge Gas Distribution. Goreway is the largest gas-fired power plant in Canada and cost C$942mn. Sithe Global is 80% owned by Blackstone Group. The plant was delayed for about two years due to financial issues at Global Power Equipment Group. Photograph courtesy of Sithe Global |
Greenfield Location: ON Operator: Calpine Corp Configuration: 1,030-MW, 3+1 CCGT with W501FD2 gas turbines Fuel: natural gas Operation: 2008 HRSG supplier: Deltak T/G supplier: SWPC, Toshiba EPC: Burns & Roe, Calpine Quick facts: This project was developed by Greenfield Energy Centre LP, a 50:50 JV of Calpine and Mitsui. | Iroquois Cogen Location: ON Operator: Northland Power Configuration: 120-MW, 2+1 CCGT with LM6000PD gas turbines CHP Fuel: natural gas Operation: 1996 HRSG supplier: B&W T/G supplier: GE EPC: Delta Catalytic Engineering & Construction Quick facts: This cogen plan is on the Abitibi River 80km northeast of Timmins. The plant sells process steam to a nearby AbitibiBowater pulp and paper mill. Northland replaced the original gas turbines with new GE turbines in 2003. Pearson Airport Location: ON Owner: Greater Toronto Airports Authority Configuration: 117-MW, 2+1 CCGT with LM6000PD gas turbines CHP Operation: 2005 Fuel: natural gas HRSG supplier: Innovative Steam Technologies T/G supplier: GE, Demag Delaval EPC: SNC-Lavalin Quick facts: This was the first plant of its kind in Canada and supplies electricity plus thermal energy for heating and cooling. Pearson Airport’s peak electrical demand is about 38 MW and this is expected to rise to about 70 MW by 2015. Surplus electricity is sold to the grid under a Clean Energy Supply contract between GTAA and Ontario Power Authority. Development began in 1998 and studies began in 2002/03 following provincial deregulation of electricity supply in May 2002. In Jan 2004, the GTAA Board voted to proceed with the construction of the plant and hired SNC-Lavalin as EPC and operations contractor. Portlands Location: ON Operator: Portlands Energy Centre Configuration: 550-MW, 2+1 CCGT with 7001FA gas turbines Operation: 2008-2009 Fuel: natural gas HRSG supplier: Alstom T/G supplier: GE, Alstom EPC: SNC-Lavalin Quick facts: The Portlands Energy Centre project was launched in 2002 by a 50:50 partnership of Ontario Power Generation and TransCanada. The site is adjacent to the retired 1,200-MW Hearn power station in an industrial section of Toronto's Portlands district. Thorold Location: ON Operator: Norhtland Power Inc Configuration: 305-MW, 1+2 CCGT with 7001FA gas turbine Operation: 2010 Fuel: natural gas HRSG supplier: Alstom T/G supplier: GE, Siemens, Shin Nippon EPC: V K Mason Construction Co Quick facts: This CHP is adjacent to an Abitibi-Consolidated Co of Canada (ACCC) paper mill and is on land owned by the paper company. Initial development began in 1997 and the project was bid into OPA's Apr 2006 CHP solicitation. Major equipment for the project consists of the GT, a fired HRSG, an extraction/condensing steam turbine generator (STG), a 9-MW back-pressure steam turbine generator, and two FW auxiliary boilers capable of burning natural gas as well as landfill gas. The facility supplies up to 350,000 pph of steam to the ACCC mill and allowed existing steam boilers to shutdown. The project was financed by Northland Power Inc, The Manufacturers Life Insurance Co, Sun Life Assurance Co of Canada, Bank of Montreal, and Northland Power Income Fund.
