Quick facts: This CHP project is a 50:50 JV of ATCO Power and SaskPower at the Potash Corp of Saskatchewan Inc.’s (PCS) Cory Mine outside Saskatoon. The steam supplied permitted the closure of direct-fired boilers at the mine and all electricity produced is sold to SaskPower Corporation under a long-term PPA. Cory Cogen opened in Jan 2003.

Meridian Cogen

Quick facts: TransAlta Cogen and Husky Energy are joint-venture partners in the Meridian plant which went commercial in Dec 1999. Electricity is sold into the Saskatchewan grid and the plant also produces steam for Husky's Lloydminster heavy oil upgrader operations. SaskPower has a 25yr PPA to buy 210 MW of electrical capacity annually from the facility. This was SaskPower's first large-scale cogeneration energy purchase. TransAlta Cogen is 50% owned by Hongkong Electric and Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Ltd.

Construction started in Jun 2010 and the plant went into operation on 5 Jun 2013. Water makeup is from the North Battleford city waster works.The project cost about C$677mn.

Spy Hill

Quick facts: After a compettive power solicitation in 2009, SaskPower signed a 25yr PPA for this project located near Esterhazy, 230km east of Regina. and just west of the Manitoa provincial bondary. Construction began in Jun 2010 and project went into operation on 19 Oct 2011 on budget and ahead of schedule. No pilese were used and the contractors put down 4,000m² of high-density foam over the site to mitigate frost penetration under the foundations. The project cost about C$141mn.
