Full commercial operation was in Nov 2006. Electrabel had a 26% stake in the project at completion and GDF SUEZ acquired control of the facility in Feb 2012.

Quick facts: Development was started by BP and Repsol and the project was sold to GN in Feb 2003. It cost about €600mn and the first block was synchronized after 22mos. At completion, this was the largest CCGT plant in Spain and could supply 4% of the country's electricity.

Escombreras Iberdrola
Location: Murcia

Quick facts: These are the first dual-fuel 9FB machines in operation and were commissioned in Oct 2006. The Escombreras Valley in Cartagena has the Enagas LNG terminal, commissioned in Apr  2006, three large-scale combined-cycles, and a Repsol oil refinery. The new CCGT plant replaced Units1-3 of Iberdola's old conventional plant. The plant design is similar to the Arco-3 plant completed earlier in 2006. Dual-fuel capability was specified to maintain contractual responsibilities with Enagas and with the grid operator.

Sagunto

Quick facts: This project was awarded in Feb 2005 and the first block went into operation in May 2007. Total project cost was €478mn. Sagunto is connected to the grid via the 400kV Morvedre and the 400kV Morvedre-Gausa transmission lines. Design thermal efficiency is 57.4% and annual gas burn is expected to be 1.2 bcm. The 30ha site has room for additional CCGT blocks.
