Quick facts: Chugach Electric started-up in 1948 with a salvaged tanker power plant and is now the largest power company in the state. The Beluga plant is sited at a small gas field and has one of the northernmost combined-cycle blocks in the world. The remote site is 40mi across Cook Inlet from Anchorage and is only accessible by barge or air. Over the years, plant operators have installed a  variety of specialized machinery and materials to facilitate onsite maintenance and repairs.

Quick facts: ML&P is owned and operated by the Municipality of Anchorage and has been providing power to Anchorage since 1932, when the City purchased a distribution system. ML&P is a vertically integrated utility and also owns one-third of the Beluga River Gas Field.

North Pole

Quick facts: Construction started on the North Pole CCGT expansion project on 30 Aug 2004 and performance and reliability testing concluded on 7 Mar 2007. The plant burns naphtha from the nearby Flint Hills Resources refinery, Alaska’s largest, and is gas-capable. The $74.9mn expansion project was necessitated by additional GVEA loads from the U.S. Strategic Missile Defense System, Pogo Gold Mine, and Alyeska Pump Station #9. The new CT has a water injection system and a carbon monoxide oxidation catalyst.

Quick facts: This CCGT is a 70:30 JV of Chugach Electric and Anchorage ML&P. The plant was opened on 9 May 2013 and is the state's most efficient thermal power station. Groundbreaking was in Mar 2011 and the project was completed in January 2013. The total cost was $359mn.
