These were the first such machines supplied in South America. Construction started in August 2005 and the units went online in 2006. The photo shows Unit-3, added in 2008. Later in the year, after a bidding exercise with 14 other companies, Genevapca was authorized to develop Venezuela’s first IPP, this gas-turbine CHP plant supplying PDVSA’s Maraven refinery in Cardon and Lagoven refinery in Amuay and VASSA, a company making mineral oils and other hydrocarbon products. Waller Marine built the $125mn power barges at the Signal International Shipyard in Orange TX. The barges measure 300ft X 100ft and sailed for Venezulea in Aug 2010. The GTs are dual-fuel capable. This vessel is moored just offshore of Baralt municipality on Lake Maracaibo. The barge was purchased by PDVSA subsidiary Bariven and relocated from the Philippines. The new facility went online at the end of May 2010 and PDI Gerencia e Ingenieria SA was the electrical contractor for a 115kV connection from La Ceuta S/S to San Lorenzo S/S. In Aug 2004, Repsol began negotiating a PPA with PDVSA and a 15yr agreement was signed in Mar 2005. Termobarrancas was designed for eventual conversion to combined-cycle operation. The simple-cycle machines completed in Oct 2003 at a cost of $195mn. A further $205mn was expended to compete the combined-cycle conversion.
