Three 450-MW blocks were initially planned with a total investment of about $1.06bn on a 235ac plant site not far from the 230kV Santa Teresa-Convento transmission line and contiguous with La Raisa PS. Although an agreement was reached in Jun 2001 with a consortium of GE, Mitsui, and Toshiba to build the $425mn facility, this project did not advance for some time, nor with the original equipment and suppliers. In Sep 2007, Corpoelec instead began work on the Termocentro CCGT project, at the original El Sitio site. In Jun 2009, Duro Felguera won a €1.5bn turnkey order for the plant and the four GTs were inaugurated in simple-cycle on 18 Sep 2013. The plant was renamed India Urquía in honor of the consort of Guaicaipuro, a notable war chief of the Teques tribe who fought the Conquistadors in the Caracas Valley in the mid-1500s.
