Chico Brewery Location: CA Operator: Sierra Nevada Brewing Configuration: 4 X 250 kW CHP Fuel: natural gas Operation: 2005 FC supplier: FuelCell Energy Inc EPC: Alliance Power Quick facts: This is one of the largest industrial FC applications and covers about two-third of the brewery electricity demand. Steam is also generated and supplied to the 125psi system. Construction started in Jan 2005 and the last machine went online in mid-May. It is planned to use biogas from anaerobic digestion of plant wastewater slurry for the molten carbonate devices. Alliance Power is responsible for plant operations.

Gills Onions Location: CA Operator: Gills Onions Configuration: 2 X 250 kW 300 MA fuel cells Fuel: biogas Operation: 2009 FC supplier: FuelCell Energy Inc EPC: Deaton & Associates LLC Quick facts: Gills is the nation's largest producer of fresh whole peeled, diced, and pureed onions. The fuel cells were ordered in Aug 2006 and run on biogas from digestion of onion juice and onion processing waste. This conserved both land and water resources previously used for composting and waste disposal. Southern California gas supplied incentive funding from California Public Utilities Commission's (CPUC) Self Generation Program.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Location: CA Operator: Alliance Power Inc Configuration: 4 X 250-kW DFC300A cells Operation: 2005 Fuel: natural gas FC supplier: FuelCell Energy Inc EPC: Alliance Power Quick Facts: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co built this plant to attain energy self-sufficiency for its Chico brewery. The four molten carbonate fuel cell modules can produce 1.2 mmBTU/hr of 125 psi steam in addition to electric power. The plan is to eventually switch from natural gas to methane extracted from anaerobic digester gas that is created by the grain and wastewater byproducts of the brewing process. 40% of the funding came from the California PUC’s Self Generation Incentive Program. FuelCell Energy provides maintenance services under a long-term service agreement.
