Istalif

Quick facts: In Nov 2006, K-water completed this minihydro plant at
Istalif, 55km north of Kabul. There are four existing RESAP microhydro
projects in the area, formerly a thriving agricultural and commercial
region devastated by the Taliban. K-water also provided operation and
management for the facility and the associated electric works for one
year.

Kajaki
Location: Afghanistan

Quick facts: This plant is on the Helmand River and the plant supplies
electricity to Kandahar and Helmand.
The 100m dam is 270m
long and can store up to 1.2bn m³ of water making it the largest
multipurpose water project in the country. Kajaki
operates year-round although water flow is highly seasonal. A third turbine was in the original
design and is now under construction with electromechanical equipment from
China. Louis Berger and Black & Veatch are lead contractors. The new, $6mn
T/G set was delivered to the site in Aug 2008 by a 100-vehicle convoy
escorted by 2,000 British troops and 2,000 additional Afghan and NATO
troops on a 5-day, 180km trip. This was the largest exercise of its kind
during the Afghan conflict.

Mahipar

Quick facts: This plant on the Kabul River about 40km downstream of
Kabul is one of three hydropower stations that supply most of the
capital's electricity. It has a 20m, concrete gravity dam.
Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau and others funded overhauls to the Sarobi
and Mahipar hydroelectric plants. In Dec 2003, the €16.6mn contracts were
signed with Voith Siemens Hydro. two of the three machines were repaired
and are now back online.

Naghlu
