Quick facts: In Jan 1995, the first of six 500-MW units went online at the Xingo hydroelectric plant bout 60km downstream from the Paulo Alfonso complex on the Rio São Francisco at the border of Alagoas and Sergipe. Initial studies on the site began during the 1950s, but the first construction contracts were awarded until Dec 1982.  Work on the 850m long, 140m high dam began 5yrs later, but continued for only 18mos when the global debt crisis caused disbursements of the $650mn syndicated loan to stop. About 18mos later, construction work resumed and in Jul 1994, the Xingo Reservoir was filled. The sixth unit commissioned in Sep 1997. Xingo cost about $610/kW. The dam is 140m high and 830m long.
