Quick facts: The Barra Grande Dam is 185m tall and 665m long. The site is on the Rio Pelotas 43km from its confluence with the Rio Canoas. Construction got underway on 27 Jun 2001 and the first unit commissioned on 1 Nov 2005. Energética Barra Grande SA is a consortium of Alcoa Aluminio (42.1752%), CPFL Geracao de Energia (25.0059%), Cia Brasileira de Aluminio (15%), Camargo Correa Cimentos (9%) and DME Energetica Ltda (8.8189%).

Quick facts: In June 2001, a consortium formed by Vale (40%), Serra da Mesa Energia SA (40%) and CEEE (20%) was awarded the development concession for the 855-MW Foz do Chapeco hydroelectric plant on the Rio Uruguai. After some delays, the project received its environmental license in Dec 2002 at which time the development consortium consisted of CEEE, CPFL, and Vale. In 2006, the consortium was restructured and the Vale stake was transferred to Furnas. In 2007, the consortium was dissolved and reorganized as a special purpose company to meet the business requirements of BNDES. The new company assumed the concession in Aug 2007. Current ownership is CPFL (51%), Furnas (40%), and CEEE (9%). Photo is from Mar 2009. The first unit went into operation on 20 Oct 2010.

Machadinho

Quick facts: In 1966 and 1969, Canambra Engineering Consultants completed a series of hydrographic studies on the Rio Pelotas which runs along the orders of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and in the 70's and 80's, Eletrosul followed-up with more work which culminated with the decision to build the plant. The initial design was ultimately deemed unacceptable and a new design was completed in the 1990s with a much smaller reservoir. In 1996, Eletrosul put the project out for project-sector development and a group of 11 companies, 7 private and 4 state-owned, joined to implement the scheme. The plant cost $618mn (excluding interest) and took five years to complete. The rockfill dam is 126m high and 700m long.
