Henry Borden Location: SP Operator: Empresa Metropolitana de Aguas e Energia SA Configuration: 1 X 43 MW, 1 X 33 MW, 3 X 55 MW, 2 X 76 MW, 6 X 75 MW Pelton Operation: 1926-1960 T/G supplier: Charmilles, Voith, AC, GE, DEW, CGE Quick facts: The Henry Borden complex is at the foot of the Serra do Mar, in Cubatão. There are two high-head 720m power plants known as Externa and Subterrânea. Since Oct 1992, power output from the Borden complex has been reduced by about three quarters by restrictions on the use of the plant for pumping only from Rio Pinheiros into the Billings Reservoir for flood management purposes. The Externa plant generators started to come online in 1926 and are powered by two Pelton turbines at the base of 1.5km penstocks. The Subterrânea machines came online in 1960 and are in an underground powerhouse 120m long, 21m wide and 39m in height. Each generator is driven by a 4-jet Pelton Turbine. The Henry Borden complex has a private funicular. For CSN, the plant provides electricity sufficient for the Casa de Pedra iron ore mine as well as limestone and dolomite production at the Arcos mine. Salto do Iporanga Location: SP Operator: Cia Brasileira de Aluminio (CBA) Configuration: 1 X 36.9 MW Francis Operation: 1989 T/G supplier: Voith, BBC Quick facts: Iporanga is in Juquiá 200km from of Sao Paulo. The dam is 77m tall and 230m long. Construction started in 1985. This is the only hydro plant on the Rio Assungui, which flows into Rio Juquiá-Guaçu downstream from Serraria, the location of the last of a series of six power plants constructed by CBA on this river. Iporanga’s average generation is 235 GWh. This dam is the longest in Brazil at 10,186m. Units 1-3 went online in Mar 1999 and Unit-14 went commercial in Oct 2003. The original design allowed for installation of four more units, but these are not planned for service in the foreseeable future. The plant is named for Sergio Roberto Vieira da Motta, an industrial engineer born in Sao Paulo and was active in vrious consultancies until he joined Hidrobrasileira S/A in 1973, where he worked most of the time until the company was sold in 1994. From 1984 to 1987, Sergio Motta was a VP at Eletropaulo and then moved into politics and government, serving as Minister for Communications from 1995 until his death in 1998. Três Irmãos Location: SP Operator: CESP Configuration: 5 X 161.5 MW Francis Operation: 1993-1999 T/G supplier: Neyrpic, Alstom, Voith, BBC, Siemens, Weg, ABB, Asea, Cegelec, Arreva EPC: Themag, Camargo Correa, Techint Quick facts: This is the largest hydroelectric plant on the Rio Tiete River and is 28km from its confluence with the Rio Paraná. The first generating unit went into operation in Nov 1993 and the fifth in Jan 1999. The dam is 3,640m long and has two navigation locks. The 9.6km Canal Pereira Barreto connects the reservoirs for Ilha Solteira and Tres Irmaos allowing for integrated operation of the two hydro plants as well as navigation between the northern and southern legs of the Tiete-Paraná system.
