The canal was constructed in 1958. The power station was built in three phases, the first of which has a 20yr PPA with Hydro-Quebec.  The other two phases have 25yr PPAs. Water from the reservoir will pass through the Eastmain-1 powerhouse and return to the river to flow into Opinaca Reservoir and then into Robert-Bourassa Reservoir. The same water will therefore be used at three generating stations: Eastmain-1, Robert-Bourassa (La Grande-2A), and La Grande-1, before flowing into James Bay. Quick facts: This site was first developed with a minihydro plant in 1916 by La Cie Price Ltee.  The municipality of Jonquiere acquired the plant and overhauled it several times.  Finally, major floods in 1996 ruined the plant and required a complete rebuild. In April 1971, Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa unveiled plans for the construction of what became the James Bay complex, one of the world’s largest assemblages of hydroelectric power stations and waterworks. In May 1972, the decision was made to built four generating stations on the La Grande River and further to divert the Eastmain and Caniapiscau rivers into the La Grande watershed. The project company was Société d'énergie de la Baie James controlled by Hydro-Québec. Construction of a 700km access road was begun in 1971 and completed in Oct 1974 at a cost of $C400mn. In the following two years, heavy equipment was brought north and construction got underway. Magpie River Location: QC Operator: Hydromega Services Configuration: 3 X 13 kW Kaplan Operation: 2008 T/G supplier: Litstroj, Koncar EPC: E S Fox Ltd Quick facts:In Nov 2002, Hydromega was retained by Hydro-Quebec and the Quebec Natural Resources Ministry to develop a new run-of-the-river generating station at the Magpie dam site in Minganie MRC 9km west of Rivi re-Saint-Jean. The site had an old H-Q minhydro plant abandoned in 1989. All environmental authorizations were obtained and site development started in Sep 2005. In Jan 2006 Koncar and Litostroj signed the electromechanical equipment supply contract and equipment erection started in Mar 2007. The plant was turned over on 14 Nov 2007 following a 100hr full-load trial. The Daniel Johnson Dam supplies the Manic-5 power station and is named after a former Premier of Quebec. In fact, the river will shortly become dedicated to achieving its hydraulic resource potential.
