Quick facts: Ertan near Panzhihua on the Yalong River took 10yrs to build and was the largest hydropower plant in China at completion and for several years thereafter. The project has a 240m concrete arch dam, an underground powerhouse 280m long by 25.5m wide and 65m high, the largest in Asia when built, and a 1,167m diversion tunnel system. Construction began in 1991 and the project was completed at the end of 1999 at a cost of about $3.9bn. This was financed with one of the World Bank’s largest single project loans. EHDC was established in 1991 and has three shareholders, State Development and Investment Corp (48%), Sichuan Provincial Investment Group Co Ltd (48%), and China Huadian Corp (4%).

Guandi

Quick facts: In Jul 1998, China National Power Industry Corp approved a feasibility report on the construction of the Guandi hydroelectric plant on the Yalong River. The site is located where Xlchang City and Yanyuan County meet in Sichuan. The plant design originally called for a 168m RCC dam and a 694mn m³ reservoir and an 1,800-MW power plant. In Nov 2007, however, Ertan Hydroelectric Development ordered 600-MW sets from Dongfang and full construction began in Oct 2010. River impoundment began in Nov 2011 and the first unit was connected to the grid on 31 Mar 2012. The Rmb 12.49bn project is the first on the Yalong since Ertan was commissioned.

Jiangbian

Quick facts: In Jun 2011, CLP completed the 330-MW Jiangbian hydoelectric plant in Jiulong County, Ganzi AP. This is CLP's largest hydro plant and the fifth hydro station in a cascade along the Jiulong River. Jiangbian has 8.7km of rock tunnels and an underground powerhouse.

Quick facts: Jiangkou is on the Furong River in Wulong County. At completion, the 139m dam was the tallest, thin-arch dam in China. Work on the installation began in Jul 1999. This project was developed as a BOO project by local investors.

Maoergai

Quick facts: The first two units at this site went online in Oct and Dec 2011, respectively. The Maoergai project has a 147m tall, clay-core, gravel dam on the Heishui River, a tributary of the Min River. The project site is Heishui Co, Aba Tibetan Qiang AP, about 260 km from Chengdu CIty. The Rmb 6.8bn project connects to the 500kV grid. Annual production is expected to be about 1,695 GWh.

Quick facts: This HPP is on the upper reaches of the Youshui River in Youyang County. The project has a RCC gravity dam, a spillway, stilling basins, a dam-type intake, and a dam toe powerhouse. The dam reaches 63m in height and has a crest length of 187m. Mean annual output is expected to be 392 GWh and the total cost of the project was 900mn yuan. Construction started in Jul 2005.

Zipingpu

Quick facts: In Feb 2001, the State Planning Commission approved the Zipingpu multipurpose water project. The lead agency and project designer was the Ministry of Water Resources. The site is on the Minjiang in Ma Township 9km from Dujiangyan City. The 156m dam is 848m long and has water supply and irrigation as its main function, but the 760-MW powerhouse makes it one of the larger multipurpose projects in China. The first unit was completed in March 2005 and all units were online by the end of the year. The plant is connected to the 500kV grid. The Zipingu Dam was somewhat damaged by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in May 2008. The epicenter was only about 5km distant from the site.
