Quick facts: This is the largest hydroelectric plant in northeast China.
The 149.5m tall, 670m long concrete gravity arch dam is on the
Di'er Songhua Jiang. There are three sets in a
right-bank underground powerhouse and two more units were added later in a
surface powerhouse on the left bank. Work began in May 1975 and the sluice
gates were first closed in Nov 1982.

Fengman
Location: Jilin

Quick facts: Fengman is on the Sounghua River 24km from Jilin City.
Construction on this multipurpose project was started by the Japanese in
1937 and the first power generation was in 1943, but the dam was not
completed until 1946. Under Chinese direction, the power station was built
out in three phases and Fengman was the largest hydro plant in Asia for a
time. The concrete gravity dam is 1,080m long and reaches a maximum height
of 90.5m. Fengman Reservoir (also called Songhua Lake) is 180km long and
reaches 75m in depth. A major dam reinforcement and overhaul program
started in 1987 and ended in 1997.

Lianhua

Quick facts: This project at Lianhua Township,
Linkou County, is the first large modern water conservancy project in
Heilongjiang. It cost 4.7bn yuan. Construction started in Nov 1992 and the
first unit went online in Dec 1996.

Nierji

Quick facts: This is a large-scale multiuse project is on the Nenjiang in
the border area between Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia. The project was
approved by the State Council in 1994, site prep began in Jun 2001,
and the first river closure was in Nov 2004. The total investment was
around 50bn yuan. The main asphalt, concrete-core dam runs 1.8km in length
and reaches 40.6m in height.

Quick facts: Shuang'gou is upstream of Shilong and part of the Shuang'gouu River cascade. The
concrete face, rockfill dam reaches 110.5m. Road construction for the
project began in 1997. Diversion works began in 199 but were postponed
several times and restarted in Sep 2003. River
closure was on 30 Nov 2004.
