Quick facts: In late 1999, the government gave the go-ahead for this
plant on the upper Yellow River about 150km from Xining. The $795mn
investment was made by 10 different companies at the national and
provincial levels. Construction got underway in Aug 2001 and the first
set went online in Sep 2004. The power project is a component of the
West-to-East Power Transmission Project and Unit-1 put China’s installed
hydropower base over 100 GW for the first time. The main hydraulic
structures include a 133m reinforced concrete-faced, rock-filled dam,
right-bank diversion system, left-bank spillway, and two discharge
tunnels. The diversion power generation system includes a
300m-long-diversion channel, 49 to 58m high-gravity dam intake, and
five 8m diameter steel penstocks.

Quick facts: Kanyang is on the the Huanghe River and is part of the Lijiaxia
cascade being 17km from that plant. Annual generation is about 992 GWh. Construction got underway in
Jul 2003, river closure was in Oct 2005, and the fist set went online in
May 2007. The main structure is 663m long and the dam reaches 36.5m. The
plant cost RMB 1.64bn.

Laxiwa

Quick facts: Laxiwa is the second cascade hydropower on the main stem
Yellow River located 33km donwstream from Laxiwa and 73km upstream from
Lijiaxia. Laxiwa is the largest hydro project in the Yellow River Basin
and a key component of the West-East Electricity Transfer project moving
electricity to the North China Power Network. Laxiwa has a concrete
double-curvature arch dam, surface spillways, deep outlets, bottom
outlets, large plunge pool, and underground powerhouse on the left bank.
The maximum dam height is 250m and the crest length is 460m. Mean annual
electricity generation is expected to be 10 TWh. The static investment
is RMB 12.33bn and dynamic investment is RMB 14.781bn. Construction got
underway in Oct 2001. River bed cutoff was at the beginning of 2004 and
dam abutment excavation began in Sep 2004. The concrete cast of arch dam
was stated on Apr 2006. The turbine order was placed in Aug 2004 and was
the largest ever received by Voith Siemens HydroPower Generation Shanghai Ltd. The
first two machines at Laxiwa commissioned in May 2009.

Lijiaxia

counties. The Rmb 5bn plant has a 165m dam. Project engineering and

Longyangxia

Quick facts: This was the first large-scale hydro plant on the
upper reaches of the Yellow River. Average power production is 6 TWh/yr.The site is on the border of Gonghe
and Guinan counties, 1.5km from the Longyanxia Gorge inlet, and 147km from Xining. Construction began in Dec 1976 and reservoir
impoundment began in Oct 1986. The first unit was put into
operation in Oct 1987 and the fourth in Jun 1989. Site elevation is
2,650m. The 178m main dam has a crest length of 396m and is 80m wide at
the base. The powerhouse is located 70m downstream from the dam toe.

Suzhi

Quick facts: Suzhi is on the Huanghe River 12km downstream of Gongboxia
HPS and 150km from Xining City. The complex includes a 52m concrete dam
and cost RMB 1.3bn. Suzhi is connected to the grid at 110kV and 330kV.
Construction started on 1 Nov 2003 and the first unit went online on 30
Dec 2005.
