Operation: 2013-2014
T/G supplier: Harbin
EPC: Northwest Hydro Consulting Engineers, Hydrochina Chengdu Engineering Corp, China Gezhouba Group Corp, China Railway 18th Bureau (Group) Co Ltd, East China Investigation and Design Institute
Quick facts: In Nov 2005, construction started on this HPP in Yanyuan and Muli counties, Liangshan Yi AP. Its reservoir on the lower Yalong reaches from Kala 358km downstream to the estuary of the main river. Planning for hydropower development on the Yalong's Jinping bend began in the 1960s. The site is unique with a 150km river length on the bend, but at times, the river courses are only separated by 16km. Between that distance, there is an elevation drop of 310m. Two projects were planned for the bend area by the former Sichuan and Shanghai design institutes along with the Ministry of Water Resources and Harza, namely Jinping-I and Jinping-II with a combined capacity of 8,400 MW. In Jul 1965, the Jinping Hydropower Engineering Headquarters was set up and design work continued. Jinping-I has a 305m-high, double-curvature concrete arch dam, one of the tallest in the world, plus spillway and dissipation systems, power tunnels, and an underground powerhouse. The T/G sets were ordered in Sep 2006. Total dynamic investment is Rmb 24.58bn and annual production will be about 17 TWh. Unit-6 commissioned on 24 Aug 2013 and Unit-5 followed on 6 Sep.
