Quick facts: In Nov 2002, Jinsha River Hydropower began development of the 2-GW Ahai hydropower project on the middle reaches of the Jinsha River in Yulong County, Lijiang City. The project company is a JV of China Huadian (35%), China Huaneng (23%), China Datang (23%), Hanergy Holding (11%), and Yunnan Investment Group (10%). The river diversion was completed in 2008, but Ahai did not receive final NDRC approval until Jan 2011 after final environmental studies. River closure was in Dec 2011 and Unit-1 completed its 72hr test run on 27 Dec 2012. Estimated annual production is 8,992 GWh. The plant is connected to the regional 500kV grid.

Dachaoshan

Quick facts: The $950mn Jinghong plant is one of six power stations on the middle and lower Lancang River and is located 400km upstream from Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. Feasibility studies for the site started in 1993 in consortium with MDX Power Co (now GMS Power). In January 2005, Harbin Electric and Alstom were awarded the contract for the Jinghong T/G sets. The first unit went commercial on 17 Jun 2008 at 830am. The project has a RCC gravity dam, ship lock, flood discharge works, and T&D facilities.

Funing Baida

Quick facts: This SHP is on the Gula River, a tributary of the You River, in Funing County, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao AP. The 42.5m tall, 163.5m long concrete gravtty dam has a powerhouse on the river bank. The plant was completed in Mar 2009 at a cost of Rmb 73mn. Power is sold west through the 110kV grid to Baise CIty.

Funing Nalin

Quick facts: This SHP is in Funing County. It has a 2m tall, masongry gravity dam at the egress of the subterranean Nalin RIver. a 160m siphon pipline/ acqueduct system leading to a headrace, a 515m long steel penstock, and the powerhouse on the left bank of the confluence of the Nalin and Gula rivers. The project was completed in late 2008 at a cost of Rmb 48mn. Power is sold west through the 110kV grid to Baise CIty.

Gelantan

Quick facts: In Oct 2002, Datang Lixianjiang Hydropower Development Co Ltd was established to build a new hydropower station as part of a cascade development on the Lixianjiang River in Simao district, Pu’er City. The development company was invested by Datang Power (70% equity), Beijing State Power Anrong Energy Source Investment Co (25%), and Yunnan Simao State Assets Management Co (5%). A 113m tall, 466m long RCC dam was built for the project. River closing works started in Jan 2006 and impoundment began in July 2008. All three units were online by Dec 2008.The plant cost about Rmb 3bn. Beifang Investigation, Gelantan generates about 2,000 GWh/yr.

Gongguoqiao

Quick facts: In Jan 2005, the pre-feasibility study was approved for the Gongguoqiao power station on the Lancang River in Yunlong County, Dali Ba Autonomous Prefecture. The site is between the proposed Miaowei dam upstream and the Xiaowan project downstream. The Rmb 9bn project has a 105m tall, 356m long RCC dam and was Yunnan's first major hydropower station during the 12th Five Year Plan period. Concrete placement began in May 2009. The first unit went online on 15 Nov 2011 and Unit-4 completed on 21 Jun 2012.

Quick facts: In Oct 2007, China Datang received permission from provincial authorities to begin preparatory work on the Guanyinyan HPP on the Jinsha River. The site is southwest of Panzhihua City on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The project is jointly invested by CDT (70%) and Yunnan Development and Investment Co (30%). The dam is 159m tall and 1,158m long with 838m built with RCC material and the balance being a rock-fill embankment with a toe-based powerhouse. Construction began in late 2008 and the river was diverted in 2010. The first three units were ordered from from TAH in Dec 2010 while Units 4&5 have Harbin turbines and generators from Toshiba Hydro Power.

Jin'anqiao

Quick facts: In Aug 2003, preparatory work was officially launched on the Jin'anqiao power station in Lijiang City in the middle reaches of the Jinsha River. The lead investor is Hanergy Holding with an 80% stake. Minority investors include Yunnan Jinsha River Hydropower Development Co Ltd (12%) and Yunnan Development and Investment Co Ltd (8%). Work started on the diversion tunnels in Jan 2004, and these completed in November 2005. The RCC dam reaches 160m and has a crest length of 640m. The dam works were officially completed in Nov 2010, having weathered several large-scale flood events, including one in March 2010. This is said to tbe the largest "private power" hydropower project in China.

Quick facts: Liuping is in Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and is the final plant in the Heshui River cascade. Construction started in Sep 2005, but the site is only 65km from the epicenter of the Wenchuan County earthquake of May 2008 and the construction process was considerably interrupted.

Liyuan is in Lijiang Yulong County, Lijiang City. The first unit was commissioned on 30 Dec 2014.

Quick facts: In Sep 2007, construction got underway on the Longkaikou hydropower station in Heqing County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. In Mar 2008, Voith Siemens Hydro Shanghai won a €65mn contract for five 400-MVA generators for the plant. In June 2009, the Ministry of Environmental Protection discontinued examination and approval of Longkaikou and the 2,040-MW Ludila project downstream pending resolution of environmental and permitting issues, an almost unprecedented development. The construction halts were rescinded in the second half of 2010 The fist unit online, Unit-2, commissioned in May 2013.
