The 149.5m tall, 670m long concrete gravity arch dam is on the Di'er Songhua Jiang. There are three sets in a right-bank underground powerhouse and two more units were added later in a surface powerhouse on the left bank. Construction on this multipurpose project was started by the Japanese in 1937 and the first power generation was in 1943, but the dam was not completed until 1946. Under Chinese direction, the power station was built out in three phases and Fengman was the largest hydro plant in Asia for a time. The concrete gravity dam is 1,080m long and reaches a maximum height of 90.5m. Fengman Reservoir (also called Songhua Lake) is 180km long and reaches 75m in depth. A major dam reinforcement and overhaul program started in 1987 and ended in 1997. Ertan Location: Sichuan Operator: Ertan Hydroelectric Development Co Configuration: 6 X 550 MW Francis Operation: 1998-1999 T/G supplier: CGE EPC: Harza, Impregilo, Philipp Holzmann Quick facts: Ertan near Panzhihua on the Yalong River took 10yrs to build and was the largest hydropower plant in China at completion and for several years thereafter. The project has a 240m concrete arch dam, an underground powerhouse 280m long by 25.5m wide and 65m high, the largest in Asia when built, and a 1,167m diversion tunnel system. Construction began in 1991 and the project was completed at the end of 1999 at a cost of about $3.9bn. This was financed with one of the World Bank’s largest single project loans. EHDC was established in 1991 and has three shareholders, State Development and Investment Corp (48%), Sichuan Provincial Investment Group Co Ltd (48%), and China Huadian Corp (4%). The project was approved by the State Council in 1994, site prep began in Jun 2001, and the first river closure was in Nov 2004. The total investment was around 50bn yuan. The main asphalt, concrete-core dam runs 1.8km in length and reaches 40.6m in height. The concrete face, rockfill dam reaches 110.5m. Road construction for the project began in 1997. Diversion works began in 199 but were postponed several times and restarted in Sep 2003. River closure was on 30 Nov 2004. Chinese companies built the plant and have entire operating responsibilities. First design was in 1978, river closure was in Sep 1983, first concrete was at the end of 1984, and the first unit commissioned on 25 Dec 1986. The concrete gravity dam is 1,185m long and 31.5m high. The left bank is part of Pianguan Co, Shanxi, and the right bank is part of Zhunger Banner, Inner Mongolia. The State Planning Commission approved the project in 1993, construction started in 1994, and river closure was completed in Dec 1995. Impoundment began on 1 Oct 1998 and the first unit went online on 28 Nov 1998, about a month ahead of schedule. Along with water storage, the plant is expected to supply about 2.75 TWh/yr for the North China grid. The concrete gravity dam reaches 105m in height and has a crest length of 443m.The three investment partners for the Rmb 6.058bn project are the Ministry of Water Resources, and the provincial governments of Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. The project has a RCC gravity dam, a spillway, stilling basins, a dam-type intake, and a dam toe powerhouse. The dam reaches height of 63m in height and has a crest length of 187m. Mean annual output is expected to be 392 GWh and the total cost of the project was 900mn yuan. Construction started in Jul 2005.
