Quick facts: This HPP is in Sensuntepeque 88km from the capital. The first studies on the Rio Lempa at La Chorrera del Guayabo were done in 1946/47 by Geroge A Fleming with the USBR. CEL was formed in Sep 1948 and signed an engineering contract with Harza for the 5 de Noviembre project. The concrete gravity dam is 65m tall and 800m long. It completed in Jun 1954. In Sep 2013, a $189mn expansion project got underway. This will add two 40-MW sets.

Cerron Grande

Quick facts: Cerron Grande is located 78km from San Salvador in the central part of the country. The plant has a 9 m dam about 800 m long and cost about $100mn. The first unit went online in Feb 1976 and the second in Feb 1977. The units were extensively overhauled and uprated starting in 2002. Provision was made for two additional units and the third unit is in design.
