Quick facts: This project (also called Pigai Aoos) is on the Aoos River in the Pinde mountains. The project has a 74m high, 300m long earthfill dam, a 3km, 3.5m diameter pressure tunnel with surge tank, an 1,100m penstock and an underground powerhouse with two vertical-shaft, six-nozzle Pelton turbines. The electromechanical contract was awarded at the end of 1986.

Quick facts: This is a 160m high, 456m long earthfill, clay-core  dam on the middle reach of the Acheloos River, the largest of its kind in Europe. Construction started in 1961. Seven months after the reservoir was filled, a moderate earthquake occurred in the area.  This has been attributed to induced seismic activity.

Quick facts: The contract for Messochora was bid in Mar 1994 and the contracts were signed in May 1996. The project was mechanically complete in Jan 2001, but has not yet been commissioned due to legal issues. The Messochora Dam is a concrete-faced, rockfill structure 150m high with a crest length of 350m. The site is on the upper reaches of the Acheloos River.

Quick facts: Named after Nikolaos Plastiras, a prominent military officer and Prime Minister after World War II. He first proposed the dam in 1925. The site is at about 1,000m elevation.

Quick facts: This 95m RCC dam was the first of its kind in Greece and the largest in Europe at completion. The plant cost 25bn drachmas.  Fly ash from the lignite-fired power plants in Ptolemaida was used in the RCC mix.
