Kapichira Location: Malawi Operator: Electricity Supply Corp of Malawi Configuration: 2 X 32 MW Francis Operation: 2000 T/G supplier: Voith, Impsa EPC: TAMS Consultants Quick facts: In 1992, a consortium of Tippets-Abbot-MacCathy-Statton Inc (TAMS) along with Knight Piesold and Merz and McLellan were contracted this hydroelectric plant at Kapichira Falls, downstream of Tedzani Falls on the Shire River in the southern district of Chikwawa. The plant has an 830m long, 26m high rock and earth-fill dam and a surface powerhouse. Siemens supplied the plant substation. Escom provided 30% of the funding for the $130mn project. The balance came from the International Development Agency of the World Bank, KfW, European Investment Bank, Commonwealth Development Corp, and FMO. Delays in financing and heavy flooding of the civil works slipped the original schedule by over two years, but the plant was finally inaugurated by Malawi’s President Bakili Muluzi on 30 September 2000. The site was sized for two more 32-MW sets. Photograph courtesy of American Consulting Engineers Council |
