Ambuklao
Location: Benguet
Operator: SN Aboitiz Power Group
Configuration: 3 X 35 MW Francis
Operation: 1956 (2011)
T/G supplier: Andritz
EPC: Guy F Atkinson Co, Harza Engineering
Quick facts: Ambuklao is in the mountains of Bokod, Benguet, 36km northeast of Baguio City. Ambuklao Dam is an earth and rockfill structure on the Agno River. The dam reaches 129m in heigh and measures 452m in length. There are 8 Tainter radial gates at the dam's spillway, each of which is 12.5m X 12.5m and 127m long. Construction began in Jul 1950 and the associated hydroelectric plant started-up on 23 Dec 1956 with Neyrpic turbines and GE generators. In Jul 1990, a major earthquake near Baguio caused landslides to occur in the area. This caused a large amount of silt to flow into the reservoir, which covered the intake tower and shut down the plant. Capacity was partially restored in 1995, but the plant was again shut down in 1999 and was out of operation for over 10yrs. In early 2009, Andritz was contracted to supply new T/G sets and the plant restarted in Jul 2011.
