Quick facts: Negotiations between Czechoslovakia
and Hungary on a joint water resources scheme started in 1951. In May
1976, the countries agreed to construct the Gabcikovo-Nagymoros Barrage
System. For various reasons, the Hungarians stopped work on Nagymoros in
July 1989, but Gabcikovo was completed after a
$400mn redesign. The plant is owned by Vodohospodárska Výstavba sp and operated by SE.

Quick facts: The Podluzany plant originally
had one Mavel MT5 Francis turbine and was permitted for five more MT5
machines, but the owned opted to install a single larger Kaplan turbine
instead. The KA 1580 turbine has a 1580mm runner, three turbine blades
and operates at a head of 3.9m. Mavel's scope also included a
generator, trash racks, cleaning machines, draft tube gate hydraulics
and electrical equipment.
