Quick facts: The British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is in the far South Atlantic. South Georgia is a large, rocky island with only a handful of permanent inhabitants, mostly concerned with various scientific pursuits, An old hydropower station on the island was abandoned in the1960s and replaced with diesel gensets. As part of a general overhaul and refurbishment of the main base at King Edward Port, the old structure were rebuilt and a new turbine installed.
