Birsfelden
Location: Basel-Landschaft
Operator: Kraftwerk Birsfelden AG
Configuration: 4 X 25 MW Kaplan
Operation: 1950-1954
T/G supplier: Sulzer, Siemens, ABB
Quick facts: In 1951, Hans Hofmann, along with architects Bercher & Zimmer and urban landscaper R Arioli were retained to undertake the design for KW Birsfelden. Hofmann wanted to avoid constructing a power house resembling a heavy, closed block and opted for a hall glazed down its full length. The 300t rolling weight of the craneway was offset by means of forked piles. The green-painted concrete is set off by white lines and white window frames to create a signature piece of industrial design.
