Gordola

Quick facts: This HPP secures water from the reservoir formed by the 220m tall, Contra Dam, the 4th highest in the country. The Gordola PS operates with a hydraulic head of 277m and supplies about 230 GWh/yr. It is operated by dam builder Verzasca under an 80yr concession. Verzasca was formed in 1960 and is a 67:33 JV of Ticino canton and the city of Lugano.

Nalps Dam

Quick facts: This is one of three storage dams that supply the 151-MW Sedrun power station. NOK owns an 81.5% share in the complex, Kanton Graubünden 10%, and local municipalities the remaining 8.5%. The arch dam was built in 1962 and is 127m high with a crest length of 480m.

Ritom

Quick facts: This plant was originally built to electrify the Gotthard railway and supplies about 150 GWh/yr. The plant uses water from Lago Ritom,a storage reservoir at 1,850m elevation in the Pioratal (Val Piora) in Quinto municipality. The original dam was built in 1918 and extended in 1950. Two penstocks of some 2,850m in length supply the powerhouse. Ritom was refurbished in 2001-2003 by Energiesysteme und Anlagentechnik AG. Among other things, the plant was equipped to allow for remote operation from SBB's central control center in Zollikofen.
