Birecik

Quick facts:This was the first large Turkish
hydroelectric BOT project and it reached financial close in Nov 1995
about 7yrs from the time the development process started. Lead arrangers
were Bayerische Landesbank, Chase Manhattan, Generale Bank, Girocredit
Bank, KfW and Societe Generale. Construction on $1.64bn plant began in
Mar 1996 and the government provided a sovereign guarantee to cover
payment obligations as well as other indirect guarantees. Ownership of
Birecik is to be transferred to the state in 2016. It has a 62.5m high,
2.5km long dam 30km upstream from the Syrian frontier. Verbundplan
operates the plant. The project was complicated by the
need for water usage agreements with both Iraq and Syria and the
discovery of the ruins of Zuegma, an ancient Roman outpost, near the
plant site late in construction.

Quick facts: The Keban Dam was the first of the large dams to be built on the
