Corito Location: Anguilla Operator: Anguilla Electric Co Ltd Configuration: 5 X 1 MW, 2 X 3.1 MW, 2 X 3.9 MW Operation: 1985-2006 Fuel: diesel oil E/G supplier: Wartsila, other Quick facts: The first genset at Corito was relocated from a temporary power plant at the government's ice plant in The Valley. With British aid and funds from the Caribbean Development Bank, the first medium-speed generator at Corito was commissioned in 1985. Peak load on the island is 13 MW.

Dr Bird Location: Jamaica Operator: Jamaica Energy Partners Configuration: 8 X 9.25 MW 12V46 engines Operation: 1995 Fuel: heavy fuel oil E/G supplier: Wartsila Quick facts: This is Jamaica’s second IPP and the $103mn power barge project was originally financed by Wartsila Power Development. Construction took 11 months. Shares were sold to U.S. utility affiliates Continental Energy Services and Illinova Generating Co, the IFC, and Scudder Latin American. The former Scudder funds are controlled by current owner Conduit Capital Partners.

EPS Location: Bermuda Operator: BELCO Configuration: 2 X 12.5 MW 8K67GSCA engines, 2 X 10.5 MW 16ZA40S engines, 4 X 14.5 MW 14V48/60 engines Operation: 1984-2005 Fuel: heavy oil E/G supplier: MAN B&W, Sulzer, Zgoda, GEC EPC: BELCO, Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor, Mott McDonald Quick facts: The total investment in East Power Station (EPS) is $153mn. The EPS extension was BELCO’s first generation project under new environmental regulations. Special measures were taken to reduce noise and the engines were fitted with taller stacks to meet air-quality regulations in the Pembroke Basin. The adjacent WPS power plant has eight gas turbines.

Cay Bay Location: Netherlands Antilles Operator: NV GEBE Configuration: 60 MW Operation: 1987-2005 Fuel: heavy fuel oil, light fuel oil E/G supplier: Stork, Wartsila, Holec Quick facts: In Feb 2005, Wärtsilä was contracted to deliver two 8-MW, 9L46 generating sets to extend Cay Bay on Sint Maarten. In 1989, Wärtsilä installed the first land-based Wärtsilä 46 engine in the existing plant which already had a 32 engine. The plant was extended by two 18V32 generating sets in 1993 and two 9L46 gensets in 2000.

Los Negros Azua Location: Dominican Republic Operator: Monte Rio Power Configuration: 13 X 8.1-MW 9CM43 engines Operation: 2003 Fuel: heavy fuel oil, light fuel oil E/G supplier: Caterpillar Quick facts: At completion, the $95mn Monte Rio power plant was the largest ever built by Caterpillar. The developer was a joint venture of Paliza-Viyella Group and Caterpillar Power Ventures. Commercial operation was in 2003 and O&M services are provided by an affiliate of GECOLSA, the Cat dealer in Colombia. Power is sold into the national grid and Monte Rio Power also reserved the right to sell capacity and energy directly to large industrial users.

North Sound Location: Cayman Islands Operator: Caribbean Utilities Co Ltd Configuration: 3 X 12.25-MW 12V48/60 engines, 1 X 16 MW 14V48/60 engine Operation: 2000-2007 Fuel: diesel oil E/G supplier: Man B&W EPC: Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor, Hadsphaltic Quick facts: Installation of the the first two engines cost $30mn. The sets have advanced engine diagnostics, additional soundproofing, an array of fuel efficiency improvements, and specially-strengthened construction for protection against hurricanes. In May 2006, MAN B&W and BWSC were contracted to supply a new unit for North Sound, a heavy-fuel-oil-compatible 16 MW 14V48/60 machine. The new unit was opened on 10 Aug 2007 and cost about $18.4mn.

Rockfort Location: Jamaica Operator: Jamaica Private Power Configuration: 2 X 30-MW 9K80MCS engines, 1 X 4 MW steam set Operation: 1998 Fuel: heavy fuel oil E/G supplier: Man B&W, Holec Quick facts: Rockfort was the first major IPP in Jamaica and was financed and built by a multinational consortium. K&M Engineering led the project structuring, development, tendering and sponsor selection process. The $144mn plant was one of the largest investments in Jamaica in the decade.

Sultana del Este Location: Dominican Republic Operator: Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina Configuration: 9 X 16.5 MW 18V46 engines Operation: 2002 Fuel: heavy fuel oil E/T/G supplier: Wartsila Quick facts: This was the world’s largest floating power plant when delivered to Wartsila in Jul 2001 by Jurong Shipyard (JSPL). The JSPL contract covered erection of the pre-fabricated power house, installation of nine engines plus piping, 45 radiator cooling systems, complete electrical system, and a 138kV switchyard. Jurong delivered the plant to schedule in seven months.

Vieques Island Location: Puerto Rico Operator: Puerto Rico Electric Power Auth Configuration: 1 X 1, 2 X 2 MW 18V20060 MW Operation: 1989-2004 Fuel: diesel oil E/G supplier: Caterpillar, Wartsila EPC: RG Engineering Quick facts: In Jan 2003, Wärtsilä won the contract to supply two Power Modules to the island of Vieques. Each of the two Power Modules is a pre-assembled, self-contained unit containing a genset and auxiliaries.
