Quick facts: This is Iowa's only nuclear plant and is situated on a 500ac site on the Cedar River, much of which is leased for farming and grazing land. The plant has over 500 employees with an annual payroll of $46mn. The unit got its construction permit in Jun 1970, its full-power operating license in Feb 1974, and went commercial in Feb 1975. In Jul 2005, majority owner Alliant Energy announced its plan to sell its ownership to FPL Group which, through subsidiary NextEra Energy Resources, now has 70% ownership in DAEC. Central Iowa Power Coop has a 20% stake and Corn Belt Power Coop holds 10%.

Kewaunee

Quick facts: Kewaunee is in Carlton on Lake Michigan about 35mi southeast of Green Bay. the NPP was built by a consortium led by Wisconsin Public Service Co and went commercial on 16 Jun 1974. Dominion acquired the station in Jul 2005. Kewaunee was closed permanently on May 7 and disconnected from the grid about 11a CDT. The closure came after long-term power purchase arrangements completed with little prospect of future sales at workable prices. Lifetime production was about 148 TWh. The unit is to be placed in SAFSTOR condition.

Monticello

Quick facts: In Jan 2009, NRC approved Xcel's application for an extended power uprate. The project took about 10yrs end-to-end and completed in mid-July 2015 when the NPP was cleared to operate at the uprate.

Quick facts: This design was known as a superheat BWR. The plant only operated for about a year and the conventional components were re-used for a coal-fired unit. The nuclear plant has been fully decommissioned.
