Quick facts: This is Iowa's only nuclear plant and is situated on a 500ac site on the Cedar River, much of which is leased for farming and grazing land. The plant has over 500 employees with an annual payroll of $46mn. The unit got its construction permit in Jun 1970, its full-power operating license in Feb 1974, and went commercial in Feb 1975. In Jul 2005, majority owner Alliant Energy announced its plan to sell its ownership to FPL Group which, through subsidiary NextEra Energy Resources, now has 70% ownership in DAEC. Central Iowa Power Coop has a 20% stake and Corn Belt Power Coop holds 10%.

Quick facts: This design was known as a superheat BWR. The plant only operated for about a year and the conventional components were re-used for a coal-fired unit. The nuclear plant has been fully decommissioned.
