Piqua Nuclear Location: OH Operator: City of Piqua Configuration: 11.5 MW Operation: 1963 (ret 1966) Reactor supplier: Atomics International T/G supplier: ?? EPC: North American Inc Quick facts: This was the first community-based nuclear plant nuclear power station in the USA. It was built as a demonstration project by the Atomic Energy Commission and was the unique instance of an organic moderator reactor with terphenyls used for for both coolant and moderator purposes. The design was not a success and the plant operated for only a short period. The $8mn facility was dismantled between 1967 and 1969, and the radioactive coolant and most other radioactive materials were removed. The remaining reactor components were entombed onsite. The facility is presently used for equipment lay-down and storage for the Piqua Municipal Electric Dept.
