Kannagawa Location: Gunma Operator: Tokyo Electric Power Co Configuration: 2 X 470 MW FPT Francis Operation: 2005-2012 T/G supplier: Toshiba, Hitachi Quick facts: Construction on this plant started in Jul 1993. Unit-1 went commercial on 22 Dec 2005 and Unit-2 completed on 7 Jun 2012. Four addtional units were in the original plan but are not currently scheduled. The powerhouse is about 1,600ft below ground and is supplied by water stored behind two dams in two different prefectures. These are the largest pumped-turbine sets in the world and are of a new more efficient splitter design. The 525-MVA air-cooled generators are also the world's largest of their type and scaled up from the 475-MVA machines at the Kazunogawa power station. The T/G sets operate with an effective head of 653m. Photograph courtesy of Tokyo Electric Power Co |
