Quick facts: The Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross is on the uninhabited island of Akdamar in Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey. It was built ca 915-921 and served as the focal point of a monastic complex until around 1915. It is now a museum and cultural center. The PV installation includes 145 modules that supply an average energy yield of 25,000 kilowatt-hours per year. Solar electricity replaced power from a diesel generator. Quick facts: In May 2010, Conergy and NSS completed a 2-MW solar rooftop installation at KAUST at Thuwal, near Jeddah. The installation includes two 1-MW arrays, one each on the north and south laboratories of the university. The power system has 9,300 solar modules with Conergy Suntop III mounting systems and Conergy 280K central inverters. The photovoltaic plant occupies 11,577m˛. The university was established by Saudi Aramco and the new KAUST campus is Saudi Arabia’s first LEED-certified complex.

Quick facts: This solar power station has 4,000 thin-film modules installed at an altitude of 2,000m on the outskirts of Kigali. Annual production is expected to be about 325 MWh. The project was commissioned by Stadtwerke Mainz AG, a continuation of a 25yr partnership between the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz and Rwanda.

Quick facts: On 10 May 2010, the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Dr José Maria das Neves, inaugurated the first of two solar parks contracted in January to Martifer Solar. This is jointly-owned by Martifer SGPS and the Ministry of Economy, Growth and Competitiveness of Cape Verde (MECC). Installed on fixed structures on a 9.75ha plot, this turnkey project uses PV panels produced in the Martifer plant in Oliveira de Frades, Portugal. At the time, this was the largest PV power station in Africa.
