McAlpine Creek Substation Location: NC Operator: Duke Energy Configuration: 50 kWp PV Operation: 2009 System supplier: ?? Quick facts: This small PV plant is part of a smart grid project in south Charlotte. Electricity from the panels can be sent directly into the distribution lines serving the McAlpine Creek test area or used to charge a 500-kW storage battery. The power and storage scheme will be used in conjunction with residential energy management systems installed during the year in the including 8,100 new smart meters with pole-mounted and line- mounted digital communications systems. These will be used to collect data for ongoing analysis. Photograph courtesy of Duke Energy |
