Coal-Fired Plants in Kosovo & Serbia

Kolubara
Location: Serbia
Operator: Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS)
Configuration: 3 X 32 MW, 1 X 64 MW, 1 X 110 MW
Operation: 1956-1979
Fuel: lignite
Boiler supplier: Steinmuller, Tlmace
T/G supplier: Siemens, Skoda
Quick facts: The site is 40km southeast of Belgrade. Construction on the "B" plant (2 X 350 MW) was started in 1988 and continued for three years until finally halted at about 40% completion by regional conflict and the termination of World Bank loan agreements. The Tamnava-West lignite field is the proposed fuel source.

Kosovo-A
Location: Kosovo
Operator: Korp Elektroenergjetike e Kosoves (KEK)
Configuration: 1 X 65 MW, 1 X 125 MW, 2 X 200 MW, 1 X 210 MW
Operation: 1962-1975
Fuel: lignite
Boiler supplier: Deutsche Babcock, Babcock & WIlcox, Rafako, Stein
T/G supplier: WH, GE, LMZ, MAN, Elektrotjazmas, Alsthom
Quick facts: Construction on the first unit at the "A" plant started in Mar 1960 and the unit was completed in Oct 1962, the largest individual generating unit in the Balkans at the time.  In 1978, its best year, the plant produced 3,391 GWh, but by the year 2000, output had dropped to 582 GWh due to war damage and accumulated wear-and-tear.

Kosovo-B
Location: Kosovo
Operator: Korp Elektroenergjetike e Kosoves (KEK)
Configuration: 2 X 339 MW
Operation: 1983-1984
Fuel: lignite
Boiler supplier: Stein
T/G supplier: Alsthom
Quick facts: Kosovo-B was both damaged and neglected during the recent conflicts in the area and restoring the plant to full operation was a major priority for donor agencies.  In Jun 2000, a contract for a major overhaul of the second unit was awarded to a consortium of Innogy, Mitsui Babcock, and Alstom: this was successfully completed ahead of schedule.
