Quick facts: Consoturcionon the minemouh plant began in 1949. The first twounits were the largest and most important of their kin in Spain wehn completed n 1952. When the third unit was added in 1958, mine production was already essentilly insufficient to fuel the plant and the cloal mines were all closed by 1964. More expensive fuel was then trucked in from other coalfields in Teruel. The plant closed in 1982.

Quick facts: With local lignite reserves declining, the Pontes plant has been converted to running on imported coal only. The 356m stack has a base diameter of 36m and tapers to 18m at the top. At completion, it was said to be the world's largest stack by volume.

Quick facts: This is one of only a handful of pressurized fluidized-bed combustion units in the world. The plant uses a 63-MW PFBC boiler and a 17-MW gas turbine. The local lignite has 5% sulfur and about 25% ash.

Quick facts: The Los Barrios steam-electric and Tarragona CCGT power stations were sold by Endesa to E.ON on 26 Jun 2008 for €769mn. A new Alstom FGD system was completed at Los Barrios in Apr 2009. The stack is 236m tall. On 5 Feb 2008, a ceremony was held to mark the 25th Anniversary of the plant's operation. E.ON Espana has spent €160mn on plant upgrades and enhancements and plans to invest an additional €60mn by 2016 on additional environmental improvements.

Quick facts: This plant was developed in the early 1960s to utilize local anthracite reserves. Unit-1 went online in Jun 1964 for operator Terminor SA. Unit-2 went commercial in Oct 1984. Local coal for Unit-2 was supplanted with imported coal in the 1990s. A wet limestone FGD from MHI was rettrofit in 2008.
