Quick facts: In Aug 1999, TEAS signed a deal
worth approximately $1.62bn with a Japanese-led consortium to build
Afsin-Elbistan-B. The region around the plant site has lignite reserves of
as much as 3.4bn, about a third of Turkey’s recoverable reserves. MHI also
supplied four FGD scrubbers and Skoda Export
supplied boiler parts, lignite mills, electrostatic precipitators from
ZVVK Milevsko, fans, drives, dampers, ash
handling systems, air preheaters, and switchgear. Local construction began
in Jun 2000, but the project was delayed by financial problems at BBP.
Subsequently, development resumed and test runs were completed on all four
units in Jan 2006.

Icdas started in 1930 as a ship repair and servicing company and entered
the steel business in 1955. It is now Turkey's largest private-sector
steel company. Two more 135-MW units were added to the Biga power plant in 2009.

Quick facts: In October 1998, Alstom was awarded an ECU
320mn turnkey contract by TEAS to supply two 160-MW fluidized-bed boilers,
turbines, generators, and control systems as part of this turnkey project.
Financing included export credit facilities from COFACE, Hermes, and CESCE
plus commercial loans. The fluidized-bed boilers – the first in Turkey –
burn around 1.75mn tons of coal a year and utilize a dry cooling tower. Construction started in June 2000
after protracted financing negotiations and the plant went online in 2004
about a year behind schedule.

Quick facts: This €1.5bn power station near Iskenderun was a flagship
project for private power development and has the largest individual
generating units in Turkey. The plant was initially announced
in 1997 and in Jul 2000, plant operator Steag signed a turnkey EPC
contract. Steag also financed about a quarter of the investment with the remaining 75% from a banking syndicate led by KfW,
Dresdner Bank, and WestLB. Steag contracted for about 3mn tpy of imported
hard coal with RAG Trading. This is offloaded in the world's largest
floating transshipment facilities capable of handling 30,000 tons of coal
per day.

ZETES-1 has a CFB boiler and was commissioned in Jul 2010.In addition to the power station, the project includes a new coal port which is the largest on the Blak Sea coast ant suitable for the 170,000 DWT ships. Areva and Kessir Grup supplied the 380kV switchyard.
