Quick facts: This is Cuba's largest single generating unit. It was converted to burn Cuba's high-sulfur HFO in 2003 and is now scheduled for converstion to natural gas firing after a Chinese/Venezuelan JV completes an LNG terminal in Cienfuegos in 2014. A 312km pipeline will also be built to supply the main power stations. This plant is named after Antonio Guiteras y Holmes, a leading Cuban socialist politician, in the 1930s. He was born in Philadephia PA in 1906, established Unión Revolucionaria in 1931, and came to advocate direct action to advance revolutionary activitlies. He was assassinated in Matanzas in 1935.

Quick facts: This is the second largest conventional power plant in South
America The plant was named after the founder of Elecar, later a subsidiary of AES Corp
and now re-nationalized. In 2003/04, Toshiba completed a comprehensive
overhaul of the I&C systems on the 460-MW sets. In Dec 1982, the plant was
the site of a large fire in a No 6 oil fuel tank. The fire and a
subsequent explosion killed numerous onlookers and safety and security
personnel.
