The first 8-MW unit at Waiau went online in 1938 and an 18-MW set was added in 1940. The plant also has two 51-MW combustion turbines. The plant is in Pearl City and was forced offline by the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941 when bomb concussions disabled plant auxiliaries. For some time thereafter, plant operators slept at the plant.
