Quick facts: In 1902, Northern Texas Traction Co built a generating plant at Handley, the largest in the area, along Lake Erie. Now known as Lake Arlington, the lake is popular recreation destination. Handley-1 was the first outdoor steam electric plant of its type in the industry. The Handley plant was acquired from TXU in Apr 2002. In May 2003, SCRs were installed on Units 4&5 and on Unit-3 in 2004.

Holly Street

Quick facts: Holly Street 3&4 were retired at midnight on 30 Sep 2007 and Units 1&2 were retired in Oct 2004. In Dec 2011, TRC Cos was hired for the $11.5mn, 18mo plant demolition. Acreage fronting and adjacent to the lake converted to parkland. For about a year, Austin Energy met monthly with a Holly Neighborhood Closure Committee to keep residents informed about closure and decommissioning plans. When fully operational, Holly Street had about 50 employees.

It was named for Clifford B Jones, past president of Texas Tech University and a local rancher. Cooling and process water is treated wastewaer from the City of Lubbock system. The plant also has two 169-MW gas turbines.
