Quick facts: The Kassel WTE plant was built at the site of the Losse lignite-fired CHP plant. This was closed in 1966 and the boilers rebuilt to burn refuse. In 1987, new pollution control equipment was added and in 1999 a new purpose-built boiler and incineration system was added and the old boilers shutdown. The plant has baghouses, dry lime scrubbers, SCR, and oxidation catalysts.

The 2-line plant cost €178mn and is operated in partnership with Zweckverband Abfallverwertung Südwestpfalz (ZAS). Throughput is 180,000 tpy of MSW.
